Rangers are in desperate need of a new striker if they want to cut Celtic's lead at the top of the Premiership.

Oli McBurnie is currently the top target, with Rangers listed at just 1/2 to sign the Swansea striker.

However, there's a much better option and he's available for free.

Abel Hernandez is the in-demand Championship hitman, who is set to be a free agent in the summer.

Hull want to keep hold of him but all signs point to the Uruguay international leaving so far.

Leeds are the favourites, with betVictor making them odds-on at just 2/5 to sign him.

However, Rangers have a huge chance to ambush their plans and steal the striker, who scored eight goals in his last nine Championship games, from under their noses.

Mark Allen and Steven Gerrard must take advantage of Ranger's 'overseas' status to make an official approach to Hernandez before any English clubs can.

Leeds will have to wait until his contract runs out on June 30.

Because Hull want to keep hold of him, that gives Rangers the chance to steal in and turn his head.

Hernandez is reportedly on £30k-a-week at the moment and will be looking for a big move at the age of 27.

However, doing the sums, if Rangers can get him for free, then paying him £30k-a-week for three years would mean an overall outlay of less than £5million.

If he monsters the Premiership as expected, then they'll be able to recoup most of this by selling him on - he's rated at £6.3million at the moment by TransferMarkt.

They'll need to be quick, though. In just over a month's time it will be a free-fora-all and the advantage could well pass to the English clubs.
