49ers line up 'major upgrades' for Derek McInnes with three new Rangers signings eyed
Rangers are planning to back Derek McInnes with the funds to spend big with at least three players being targeted in key positions.
The former Hearts boss arrived at Ibrox earlier this week following Danny Rohl's decision to join RB Salzburg in Austria after what was a frustrating end to his Ibrox stay.
However, Rangers are not letting the unexpected changes at the top derail their ambitious transfer plans ahead of what has become a crucial window.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Rangers are set to hand McInnes funds to improve his side ahead of the new season starting.
There is a feeling that the Ibrox club need "major upgrades" in a number of key positions if they are to compete next season, with work underway behind the scenes.
Rangers are targeting the addition of a new striker, central midfielder, and a right-back as a minimum as they brace for a busy window.
Are Rangers planning to spend big this summer?
Brown told Football Insider on 15 June that McInnes could kickstart a major overhaul at Ibrox, with a number of key positions to be addressed in the summer window.
The former Hearts boss will be allowed to assess his team and decide on key areas to improve, but the club have already begun work in that department.
They had planned to back Rohl for a potential overhaul this season, and while the manager may have changed, their transfer plans remain the same.
"They're going to need a big overhaul, but getting McInnes in could be the start of that for them," Brown told Football Insider.
"It's become clear at Rangers that there are some key positions which they will need major upgrades in if they are to turn around their fortunes next season.
"They want to sign a new striker, because their current options simply aren't scoring enough goals, a new midfielder to bolster their options there, and certainly a new right-back.
"This squad is short of quality in general, but if they can make signings in those three key positions, it will be a good step towards moving forwards.
"It's not going to be easy for Rangers this summer, it's hard enough as it is to tempt players to move to Scotland, but even more so after they finished in third place.
"But they know where they want to go and how they want to do that, now it's just about backing the manager to take those positive steps."
Which poisition with be Rangers' priority this summer?
Rangers are aiming to improve their squad in a number of key positions with work already ongoing behind the scenes to identify ambitous transfer targets this summer.
The addition of a new striker has been considered at Ibrox, as has a midfielder amid concerns about their current options, but a right-back is their current priority.
Football Insider revealed last week that Rangers are pursuing a deal to sign Westerlo right-back Bryan Reynolds after he emerged as the leading target in his position.
The 24-year-old has impressed with the Belgian club, and with just one year left on his contact, could be allowed to move on for a cut-price fee.
Meanwhile, Rangers defender Turr Rommens could play a key part in the deal, having playing alongside Reynolds before his move to Ibrox.
