Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh's turbulent time at Ibrox could be set to take another twist as Red Bull Salzburg push to appoint Danny Rohl.

The Austrian club are reportedly keen to bring the German back to the Red Bull group this summer after dismissing Daniel Beichler last month.

The 37-year-old worked in several roles with RB Leipzig between 2010 and 2018, ultimately becoming Ralph Hasenhuttl's assistant in 2016.

Rangers fans were keen to see Rohl sacked at the end the season, after a four-game collapse saw the title slip out of their hands and into Celtic's.

That, combined with the controversially-handled exit of club legend James Tavernier, has seen the young manager's popularity fall significantly.

Cavenagh came out swinging for Rohl at the end of the campaign, but the American may now have to eat his words.

Danny Rohl exit would reflect poorly on Andrew Cavenagh

Despite a torrid end to the season under Rohl and huge fan pressure, Cavenagh made the club's position clear in May.

Rangers' manager would be staying put, the chairman reiterated, and decision-makers at Ibrox are certain that he is "the right coach".

The American even claimed that, with a revamped squad and a full pre-season, Rohl would be a success.

"With those two things, we believe he can succeed," he said. "Danny wants to be here, we want Danny to be here, and most importantly we believe he is the best manager to bring a title to us next year."

Less than a month later, those comments may well have aged incredibly poorly. According to Florian Plettenburg, Rohl could envision a return to the Red Bull group, and it could well be set to happen.

After having made such a big song and dance of backing the German, it would be yet another source of considerable embarrassment for Rangers to have to now find another manager to lead their project.

Rangers ownership at risk of losing fans

Rangers will be well aware that this summer is a massively crucial one, after such a disappointing season.

The appointment of Russell Martin and the subsequent summer transfer window have already muddied some views of the 49ers.

Rohl's exit and a summer of uncertainty would see an end to that trust completely for many. Confidence must be restored at Ibrox, and assurances must be made.

Cavenagh has spoken well since his arrival at Ibrox, but he must now show fans that he can back up his words.
