Camilo Duran should get retrospective ban as Celtic vs Rangers footage goes viral

Celtic's Camilo Duran must be used by the Scottish FA to set an example after he attempted to hurt an opponent against Rangers.

Martin O'Neill's side were on the wrong end of a 1-0 result in the latest Old Firm on Sunday, 20 September, with Ryan Don Naderi netting the only goal.

Despite no away fans, referee John Beaton really struggled to keep the pot from boiling over at Celtic Park, feeling the need to caution Derek McInnes after just a couple of minutes.

He made several errors, including not sending Emmanuel Fernandez off for a second yellow, and punishing Min-Su Kim for being hit in the face.

But his and VAR's biggest mistake of the entire game came within seconds of kick-off, with Duran wanting to leave a marker on his opponent early.

He disguised an attempt to harm Nico Raskin by jumping in the air and blocking the clearance, only to kick out at the Belgian on his way down.

Beaton appeared to spot the incident, stopping play immediately to speak with the pair, but he refused to take the Celtic forward's name seconds into the game.

With the footage now doing the rounds on social media, it is clear that after Beaton failed to act appropriately, VAR should have shown him a replay.

That way, it would have been an easy decision to send the Hoops down to 10 men, but instead, he let it slide and brushed it under the carpet.

McInnes had every right to be furious. Rather than listen to the Gers manager, however, he was punished for his outburst on the sidelines.

If the Scottish FA and Willie Collum are serious about stamping out violent conduct, Duran would be handed a three-match ban in the coming days.

Rangers fans are, understandably, still furious with the decision, especially given how many injuries they already have at Ibrox.

Lawrence Shankland, Youssef Chermiti, Daisuke Yokota and Tuur Rommens are all watching from the sidelines, and Raskin could have joined them.

This noise is unlikely to go anywhere until the Scottish FA address it, but it would not be a surprise to see an attempt to brush it under the carpet instead.
