Kevin Muscat has already given Rangers his answer as move considered amid Danny Rohl uncertainty
Talks are mounting over a move that would see the German appointed by RB Salzburg, despite his backing at Ibrox.
There was clamour among the fans to see him sacked at the end of the season after the Gers had collapsed, but decision-makers chose to stick with him.
However, Rohl could now be set to leave Rangers after all as familiar names like Muscat emerge once again.
Decision-makers at Ibrox approached the Shanghai Port manager last year as they looked for a replacement for Russell Martin, but despite going close, the deal ultimately fell apart.
Hearts manager Derek McInnes and Steven Gerrard are also under consideration in the seemingly increasingly likely event that Rohl does depart.
Kevin Muscat opened the door to Rangers
Muscat spent a season at Rangers as a player, making 21 Scottish Premiership appearances in the 2002-03 league-winning season.
It has become an increasingly likely thought that he could return to the club as a manager, having been hugely successful in recent years.
Muscat has enjoyed massively successful periods in Australia with Melbourne Victory, Yokohama F. Marinos and Shanghai Port.
The one big blemish on his management career is that he is yet to succeed in Europe, failing in a brief stint with Belgian side Sint-Truidense in 2020.
Yet the 52-year-old remains a strong character and clearly an influential presence, which some would feel is exactly what the Rangers squad need.
"I’ve got to plan for next season and make sure we get things right with pre-season and recruitment," said Muscat in November after his potential Rangers appointment had collapsed.
"Then, naturally, I’ll take a break and we’ll see what happens. The reality is I don’t know what is next, so I’ll be just going about business as usual, mate.
"What’s meant to be will be. I look at it and think to myself … well, if I’m in an environment where I’m happy, my family’s happy, I’m able to go about my business and it’s appreciated, I’m content. What I do know is that if I take my foot off the gas, it’ll be much harder for opportunities to arise.
"So I’ll just keep my head down, keep working hard, keep working to win trophies. If doors open, great. Time will tell what that looks like.”
Muscat's big red flag
Muscat arrived at Sint-Truiden in 2020, initially as a technical director before taking the manager's job when Nicky Hayen had been sacked.
But it would be just 14 games of the 2020-21 season before the Australian was dismissed from his duties, having won just two games.
Muscat's team were conceding at will, picking 27 out of their net in the 14-game stint, while scoring just 17.
The 52-year-old has had plenty of time to progress since then but the stint remains his only one in Europe and until there is another, it will be used as a stick to beat him with.
