Derek McInnes was 'always tempted' by Rangers, but he's making a 'mistake' now - ex-Aberdeen chief

Derek McInnes has always dreamed of having the chance to manage Rangers.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the 54-year-old is taking a big risk for his career by turning his back on Hearts.

This comes after the news that the Light Blues are working on finalising the deal for McInnes to replace Danny Rohl in the Ibrox dugout.

Wyness has suggested that a return to Ibrox has always been a dream scenario for the former Gers midfielder, but added that he is about to make a "mistake" by joining at this time.

McInnes came within one game of securing Hearts' first Scottish Premiership title since 1960, but is now about to reject the chance to build on those foundations.

Wyness believes he is making a move that could easily come back to bite him, and feels that he would have been better served by staying at Tynecastle.

Keith Wyness: Derek McInnes' exploits could have led to English job

Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that McInnes could have been in contention for a managerial job in England had he continued with Hearts.

The Scottish businessman made it clear that the former Aberdeen boss could have really made a name for himself by staying to turn Hearts into a top force in Scotland.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness outlined that McInnes is making the wrong move by going to Rangers.

"He (McInnes) has always been a Rangers man. When we had him at Aberdeen, he was always tempted to go to Rangers. So think it's the job he's dreamed of in many ways," he said.

"I think for him, it would be the Rangers job and then the Scotland job after that would be his dream scenario in his career. He's got to believe that they're going to get things right in terms of the squad development.

"There are question marks about that, and he's giving up a really big chance with Hearts to build on something and really make a name for himself.

"He could have gone further than Rangers. He may have landed a job somewhere south of the border if he managed to get Hearts going and make them break the stranglehold of the top two.

"McInnes is Rangers through and through in his head. He's done it for loyalty. The loyalty in Scotland has always been the downfall, as it's the way that people have made mistakes. And I think McInnes, in my point of view, is making a mistake."

Derek McInnes to kickstart 'big Rangers overhaul' as post-Danny Rohl plan emerges

Rangers have always planned for Derek McInnes arrival

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on Monday that Rangers have been expecting Rohl to jump ship in recent weeks.

The ex-recruitment man outlined that the speed of their move for McInnes is a clear indication that they always felt a change would be in the pipeline.

Brown suggested that it is something the Ibrox hierarchy have had in mind "for weeks," and they already have plans in place for their next steps.

They are prepared to help McInnes "overhaul" the squad ahead of the new campaign, and believe that getting him through the door can mark the start of a new era.
