Rangers 'doing everything' to keep Dujon Sterling in new contract verdict

Rangers are planning to offer Dujon Sterling a new contract to ensure his long-term future remains at the club.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding start to the season under Derek McInnes and has established himself as a crucial part of the new manager's starting XI.

So far this season, the right-back has made 11 appearances across all competitions, and recently earned high praise for his performance in the 1-0 win against Celtic.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Sterling's performances have impressed those at Ibrox who are determined to keep him at the club.

His current contract is set to run until 2028 after he penned an extension back in 2024, placing the club in a strong position with regard to his immediate future.

However, Rangers are keen to reward Sterling for his recent upturn in performances alongside securing his long-term future by handing him another extension.

Has Dujon Sterling earned a new contract at Rangers?

Following James Tavernier's exit at the end of last season, doubts had grown about Sterling's ability to replace him, given his history of injury issues and inconsistency.

Despite reports elsewhere suggesting that Sterling's contract could be up at the end of this season, he still has two years remaining, and there is no major panic at Ibrox.

However, the club are keen to ensure his long-term future is at Ibrox as they believe his performances will attract high-profile interest from elsewhere.

"Rangers have got to be doing everything in their power to keep their best players at the club," Brown told Football Insider.

"So when there's somebody like Dujon Sterling, who has really impressed this season and established himself as a key part of the squad, they won't want to risk losing him.

"He's still got a couple of years left on his current contract, but that can tick down quicker than you think, it's important to get these players tied down long-term.

"If he continues to play at the level he has done this season, it will be a no-brainer for them to extend his deal, both to secure their asset and as a reward for his performances."

Which other players are Rangers keen not to lose?

Rangers' plans to offer Sterling a new contract have come as they aim to keep their best players at the club long-term rather than risk losing them when the transfer window opens.

While that goes for players who are currently under permanent contracts, there is also a focus on current loanees, with James Penrice's future currently a topic of discussion.

Football Insider revealed on 20 September that Rangers are preparing a move to sign Penrice permanently, and are currently in favour of triggering his option to buy.

The 27-year-old has been outstanding since his arrival on loan from AEK Athens, particularly during their huge 3-0 win against Celtic where he was widely praised.

Sources say the deal is considered a "bargain" for the Ibrox club given the level of performances he has already shown this season as a key part of McInnes' side.
