Rangers in 'tricky' Findlay Curtis contract dilemma as new hurdle to agreement emerges
Findlay Curtis could be tempted to leave Rangers should the right offer arrive as he prepares to head to the World Cup with Scotland.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a strong second half of the season out on loan at Kilmarnock, earning him international recognition as part of Steve Clarke’s side.
However, his impressive displays have also attracted interest from clubs across Europe including in England, and that could result in formal bids.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that clubs will have scouts at the World Cup keeping tabs on Curtis among others.
Danny Rohl would be extremely reluctant to lose the winger this summer, but it may be taken out of his hands ahead of a crucial transfer window for Rangers.
Could Rangers be set to lose Findlay Curtis this summer?
Football Insider reported on 30 May that Rangers could struggle to keep Curtis, with clubs placed on alert by his performances in recent weeks.
While Rangers have no plans to lose their star academy graduate this summer, growing interest could mean their resolve is tested after the World Cup.
“Rangers want Findlay Curtis to sign a new contract,” Brown told Football Insider.
“When somebody like Curtis comes through the academy and impresses to the point of getting international recognition, they can’t afford to let him go.
“If he’s going to play a key role as has been suggested, I’m sure he will be happy to sign a new contract, but if not then questions might be asked.
“He’s going to have suitors from clubs across Europe, probably in the Premier League as well, because of his recent performances.
“Whenever there’s a 19-year-old putting in impressive displays and now getting into the Scotland squad for the World Cup, it puts clubs on alert.
“Pretty much every club in Europe will be sending scouts to the World Cup to keep an eye on players they may not otherwise get to see.
“Curtis is somebody I’m sure will be watched closely because if he shows up for Scotland, that will be a real show of his talent.
“Rangers obviously hope they can keep him with a new contract, but if that doesn’t get sorted and he goes and impresses at the World Cup, it could be tricky.”
What do Rangers have planned for Curtis?
Rangers do not plan to lose Curtis in the summer window and hope he will return to Ibrox to become part of the first-team plans under Rohl.
The boss is set to utilise the winger as part of his squad next season, with long-term plans for the club to build around him as he continues his development.
As a result, Brown told Football Insider on 1 June that Rangers are holding contract talks with Curtis in a hope to put an end to speculation about his future.
The Ibrox club hope to get him tied down to a new long-term deal and are believed to be doing everything in their power to reach an agreement.
However, should those talks fail to progress ahead of the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada, it may prove difficult to keep him around.
