Lewis Ferguson is unlikely to join Rangers in January as Bologna plan to block their approaches, sources have told Football Insider.

Ferguson has been constantly linked with a move to Rangers over the last 18 months as he shines for Serie A side Bologna.

The 27-year-old midfielder has previously said that he would like to play for the Gers, who are his boyhood club, and links about a move were rife in the summer window.

Rangers ultimately missed out on his signature, and Ferguson recently confirmed their interest but admitted that nothing was ever close to being agreed between the two clubs.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers will struggle to secure a deal for his services midway through the campaign as Bologna have no plans to let him leave.

He has started regularly for the Serie A side so far this season after struggling for consistent minutes towards the end of last term.

Lewis Ferguson to Rangers still unlikely in January despite new rumours

Rangers passed up on the opportunity to sign Ferguson while he was at Aberdeen as he eventually left the Premiership for Bologna in 2022.

They have been made to regret that decision, with the Scottish international featuring 140 times for the Serie A club and captaining them to their first trophy in 51 years as they lifted the Coppa Italia last year.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Every window we talk about Lewis Ferguson and Rangers. It's a link that won't go away because of the obvious links between him and the club. He has been away on Scotland duty, so the question of him joining has reared its head again.

"I don't see anything happening imminently on this one, because look, Ferguson is doing really well for Bologna. It would be a big price tag to even convince Bologna to sell as well, so right now I think it's a bit of a non-starter."

What has Ferguson said about joining Rangers in the last week?

Ferguson's father and former Ibrox star, Derek, recently revealed that his son had agreed personal terms with Rangers in the summer, but they failed to submit a concrete offer before the deadline passed.

He was asked about the situation and his potential future career aims during a press conference earlier this week, replying: "I had a long think after the World Cup about my future and I was a little bit unsure but nothing was ever that close.

"It's no secret that I grew up as a fan and my family is involved in the club. It was a dream of mine as a kid, and that's not changed, but I don't want to speak about that while I'm a player at Bologna. In the future, you never know. It might happen, it might not, but it's always been something in the back of mind."
