Sources: Thelo Aasgaard could return to Rangers as new transfer plan in place
Rangers could be forced to change their transfer plans if Thelo Aasgaard returns next summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 24-year-old completed a season-long loan move to Anderlecht in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, but has yet to start a league game for his new club.
His loan deal also includes a £4million option to buy at the end of the season, which Rangers hope will be triggered as they aim to raise money from his potential sale.
However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, there is a possibility that Aasgaard will return to Rangers following his loan spell.
Derek McInnes does not view the midfielder as part of his long-term plans at Ibrox, hence the decision to allow him to move on, and a return could complicate his situation.
Should Aagaard fail to complete a permanent move to Anderlecht next summer, Rangers are likely to offer his services elsewhere in a bid to complete a permanent sale.
How do Rangers feel about Thelo Aasgaard's future?
Football Insider revealed on 18 September that Rangers are hopeful that Aasgaard will complete a permanent move to Anderlecht and have no plans for him to return.
Even if the Belgian club opt against making his stay permanent, he does not feature in McInnes' plans for the future, and new offers will be entertained.
For now, however, the focus is on seeing the midfielder improve his performances on loan with an eye on that £4million option to buy being triggered.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "There's a £4million option in that loan deal as well, so if Anderlecht are willing to pay that, the deal will get done.
"A lot will depend on how Asgard performs for the Belgian club this season as well. If he performs well, then there's every possibility that they will take that option.
"If he doesn't, then he might see himself returning to Rangers come the end of the season and find himself maybe looking for a new club after that.
"So the ball's in Thelo Aasgaard's court right now as well. I think if he does well, Anderlecht obviously could be more inclined to take up that option.
"If he doesn't, he might have to go back to Ibrox where he is not currently part of their long-term plans, and they could then look to sell him permanently."

Aasgaard is not the only on-loan star being discussed behind the scenes at Ibrox ahead of the 2027 transfer windows, with long-term plans being put in place.
Three players left Ibrox on loan during the summer, with Danilo and Nedim Bajrami also completing short-term exits, while Rangers are also benefiting from a temporary deal.
Football Insider revealed on 18 September that Rangers are planning to trigger James Penrice's option to buy come the end of the season after a strong start to life in Glasgow.
After an outstanding performance in the 3-0 win against Celtic last weekend, Rangers are keen to keep the left-back around, and plans are now being put in place.
The Ibrox club made sure to include an option to buy in their deal for the AEK Athens loanee, with a view to him becoming a key part of the squad for the long-term future.
