Stefan Borson suggests Derek McInnes' compensation payout from Rangers sack

Derek McInnes' compensation fee will not be the "key driver" behind the manager's impending sack at Rangers.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Gers will have to pay for more than just the manager's exit should they make a change.

The Light Blues are currently on a four-game winning streak after beating St Mirren, but McInnes was instantly on the back foot after his side were knocked out of Europe.

Rangers limped to penalty shootout defeat to Czech side Jablonec, and are now already five points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Keith Wyness, formerly of Aberdeen, told Football Insider that McInnes could already come under mounting pressure if the Gers fail to beat their rivals in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals.

There are serious concerns that the 55-year-old could be replaced just 11 matches into his tenure at Ibrox, but even the manager has admitted that it's been a rough start.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained that the Gers are unlikely to have to pay out McInnes' full contract, but it won't be cheap.

"It is expensive, but it's not three years of cost. They'll almost certainly have a fixed amount they have to pay for him to leave," he said.

"Maybe they pay three months in the first year and six months from the end of the third year. It'll be something like that rather than getting his three years even if he leaves in the first month.

"So it won't be the key driver. The key driver will be, is this the guy? Do we think there's any prospect of this guy turning it around? That'll be the equation.

"And then if not, then they'll have to take the pain of the fee. And then of course, first of all, there's the cost of getting rid of the entire coaching team that came with him.

"And then, the cost of bringing in a new team. And that's not cheap either, depending on who it is."

Rangers' growing injury list ahead of Celtic

The Gers simply need to beat their bitter rivals in the Scottish League Cup this weekend, or the manager will truly be feeling the heat at Ibrox.

McInnes was already without Youssef Chermiti, and Lawrence Shankland has now been sidelined for the next four months with a hamstring injury.

Tuur Rommens is also likely to be an absentee, but Martin O'Neill's Hoops have more than enough of their only issues to contend with.

O'Neill is also under a little bit of pressure, but with Celtic still playing in the Europa League, the 74-year-old has more room to manouvre in a difficult season.
