Insider reveals 'clear winner' as Rangers and Celtic race for Max Dowman

Published on:

Rangers are the clear favourites to sign Arsenal starlet Max Dowman if his parent club opt for a Scottish loan in January.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Gers' superior stability compared to Celtic stands them at the front of the queue.

Dowman has been heavily linked with both sides of the Old Firm of late, amid suggestions that Arsenal could loan him out to gain senior experience this winter.

Wyness is adamant that the Ibrox side would provide a better fit for the 16-year-old attacking midfielder, having proved their suitability as a loan club with Mikey Moore last season.

The Tottenham starlet quickly became a key figure for the Gers, and ended his time in Scotland with seven goals and four assists to his name.

Dowman is set to turn 17 at the end of December, and he could soon be about to follow in Moore's footsteps and enjoy a stint with Rangers.

Rangers' biggest competition for Max Dowman loan

Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that the anger surrounding Celtic at the moment will effectively rule them out of the race for Dowman.

Instead, the Scottish businessman believes that Rangers' biggest rivals when it comes to securing Dowman's services will be clubs in the English Championship.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained why Rangers will be at the front of the queue in Scotland.

"I think for Dowman, it would be coming into a club that has got stability, which is what Arsenal will want for him, to be sure he's going to get minutes, which Rangers proved they can do with Mikey Moore," he said.

"He would be part of a whole stable organisation that's moving forward, which Rangers, as I just said, seem to be showing signs of. Celtic at the moment would be the complete opposite of that.

"To me, there's only one winner in this case if it is in fact a Scottish loan. Although I think maybe the Championship might be better for him if he were to go anywhere.

"But if it was to be Scotland, then Rangers would be the best option. I think it would be excellent for all parties. But for Dowman, I think that at his age, it's a long way to go to Glasgow, and you're in a big inferno in Glasgow.

"I know Moore managed it, but I think some of his family were up there as well at the same time. So it's a difficult one, but a lot of factors to consider. But on the football side, I think Rangers are the clear winners."

How do Arsenal feel about Dowman loan?

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Arsenal are still undecided on how they will handle Dowman's future in January.

The Premier League champions are only prepared to loan out their young prodigy if they are certain that a move away will benefit his long-term development.

Sources say that there is still a reasonable chance that Dowman is kept around at the Emirates Stadium to provide injury cover for Mikel Arteta's squad.

The starlet has only made one appearance in the league so far this term, but has featured in both the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.
