'I've had quite a few fights with managers' - Derek McInnes in 'very thorny' Rangers issue after U-turn

Published on

Derek McInnes will now be under huge pressure from the Rangers hierarchy to hit the ground running when the new Scottish Premiership campaign gets underway.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the 49ers will expect swift results after agreeing to change the club's pre-season plans.

The Light Blues had been set to travel to Austria for their summer training camp, a move planned by previous boss Danny Rohl, but the team have now jetted out to Spain instead.

Wyness believes that it is little more than a "personal choice" from McInnes, with the board keen to keep him happy in the early stages of his tenure.

Rangers took on South African side Kaizer Chiefs in Spain on Sunday night, playing out a 1-1 draw behind closed doors, with a late equaliser coming from Findlay Curtis.

They also have public friendlies against French side Saint-Etienne and West Ham United later in their preparations.

Keith Wyness: Pre-season tours a 'very thorny' issue

Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that pre-season tours can be a contentious issue between managers and the club hierarchy.

The Scottish businessman does not believe that McInnes' U-turn away from the Austria tour should be viewed as a criticism of his predecessor.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, he did explain why the new boss' decision may create an issue for him later down the line.

"It's not as simple as it looks from the outside, this one. It's a very thorny issue, and I've had quite a few fights with managers over the years," Wyness said.

"So I don't read anything into this at all about criticism of past regimes. It's often a personal choice from managers, and as a CEO you tend to keep the manager happy at the start of the season, and managers know that.

"They tend to ask, and they tend to get at the start of the pre-season, but then again, CEOs never forget.

"That's one of the favours we gave you, and so we expect return, and we expect you to start the season off well, so it's a double-edged sword for those managers."

Rangers accelerate midfielder move to avoid hijack

Football Insider revealed last weekend that Rangers are ready to step up their pursuit of Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl amid a spike in interest from Turkey.

The Ibrox outfit are trying to be "proactive" to nail down their long-term target, and saw a bid for the 20-year-old knocked back by Tromso last week.

Several Turkish Super Lig sides are now understood to be readying offers for the promising starlet, which has sparked a fresh sense of urgency for Rangers.

Dahl already has six goals and two assists to his name from just games this season, and netted for Tromso in a 4-0 win over Valerenga last Saturday.
