Keith Wyness shares what it would take for Rangers to re-sign James Tavernier
Rangers should not be looking to re-sign former right-back James Tavernier under any circumstances this summer.
That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that it would simply not be a cost-effective deal for the Gers.
This comes after recent suggestions that the Ibrox outfit could look to reunite with their former captain, who departed at the end of last season after 11 years of service.
However, Wyness believes that would be a "very negative move" from Derek McInnes and Co. and feels that it would be a waste of their budget.
Tavernier remains without a club at the moment, with several links to the likes of Saudi Arabia and Turkey coming and going in recent weeks.
The 34-year-old could be signed outside of the transfer window as a free agent, but Wyness has urged Rangers not to backtrack and agree a return.
Why James Tavernier move would be a 'mistake' for Rangers
Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that a move for Tavernier would undoubtedly be a "mistake" for Rangers.
He warned that the defender would require a significant signing-on fee, plus several other bonuses within what would be a lucrative contract.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness was adamant that the burned bridges will now be irreparable for Tavernier.
"I really think it would be a mistake for Rangers to do that, no matter how well respected Tavernier was," he said.
"Once you've burned your bridge the way it all happened, I don't think you go back. Plus, it's not a cheap option either.
"For him to come back at his age, there would be a signing-on fee. It would be bonuses, and there'd be wages. And you're also blocking a space of development of a younger player coming through.
"So it would be a very negative move if I think this was to happen. I don't think it's the right answer for Rangers at all. I think it'd be very negative."
Rangers turn attention to Tawanda Maswanhise deal
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Rangers are likely to line up a move for Motherwell striker Tawanda Maswanhise in the coming weeks.
McInnes's side are in the market for a new striker after the injury to Youssef Chermiti, and Brown expects them to look at players who are already established in the Scottish Premiership.
Maswanhise led the entire league in goalscoring with 17 strikes last term, but would require a lofty fee at this stage of the window.
The 23-year-old ahs been on the radar of both Old Firm clubs in recent months, but has proven to be out of reach for the duo so far.
