Rangers told how to 'turbocharge' new player model after overtaking Celtic

Published on:

Rangers could "turbocharge" their new player trading model by securing regular European football in the coming years.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Gers are heading "in the right direction" when it comes to their transfer business.

Derek McInnes' side have begun working to develop and sell on promising stars in recent years, and have recently become the Scottish Premiership's most valuable squad.

Wyness is adamant that Rangers overtaking Celtic in that department shows that their model is slowly starting to work, but is adamant that Europe holds the key to their next steps.

Transfermarkt revealed at the start of October that Rangers' squad is now worth over £131million, with Celtic's group worth just £104m by comparison.

The pair of Glasgow giants sit far beyond the rest of the league in that metric, but Wyness believes the gap can grow even more.

Rangers need access to new 'shop window'

Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that regular European football would create a new "shop window" for Rangers to showcase their stars.

The Scottish businessman feels that strong performances at continental level could potentially catapult the Gers' stars to a new level of value on the market.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained how elite European football could affect Rangers' model moving forward.

"I think that's a fair comment to say it's heading in the right direction. There are still some mistakes being made, but nevertheless it is going in that direction," he said.

"What's missing, of course, is Europe, because you need to have that shop window to put your young talent in and let them showcase themselves in the European games.

"That's what would turbocharge the model. But there seem to be some signs that they're starting to get things on track. It always takes two or three seasons to get things right like this.

"But overall, yes, we can say that they're going in the right direction. Europe is a big, big factor for both Celtic and Rangers. And in a model like this, you do need that shop window."

Rangers exploring deal to sign Arsenal starlet Max Dowman

Football Insider revealed on Friday that Rangers will explore the possibility of signing Arsenal starlet Max Dowman on loan in the January window.

The attacking midfield prodigy is increasingly likely to be allowed out on loan when he turns 17 at the end of December.

Sources say that Rangers are one of several sides who are weighing up a potential move for Dowman, who holds the record as the Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer.

The Ibrox outfit had huge success with Mikey Moore's loan deal from Tottenham last term, and they could now repeat that trick with the other half of North London.
