Sources: Rangers plot Dujon Sterling move as clubs circle for transfer

Rangers are "very keen" to shore up the future of defender Dujon Sterling with a new contract, sources have told Football Insider.

The centre-back is out of contract at Ibrox in the summer of 2028, but the Gers are now hoping to sit down and discuss an extension to his deal.

Sterling's performances so far in 2026-27 have caught the eye, and that has prompted interest in him from elsewhere.

Sources say that several other clubs have been alerted to the 26-year-old's progress, with Rangers keen to "ward off" that interest as soon as possible.

They have no "immediate plans" to open talks with Sterling, but they are well aware that they cannot run the risk of losing him for free later down the line.

The former Chelsea ace has been a key figure for Derek McInnes so far this term, and starred in the recent back-to-back victories over Celtic.

Sterling is one of several first-team Rangers stars who are out of contract in 2028, with key midfielder Nicolas Raskin also in the same boat right now.

The club have a reasonable amount of security over the defender's future for now, but they are not prepared to allow him to run into the final year of his deal.

With that in mind, Rangers have every intention of sitting down with Sterling and discussing a new deal before the end of the campaign.

They hope that making that move will prevent the interest in his services from elsewhere from increasing, ahead of what could be a pivotal summer for him next year.

If Rangers cannot agree a new deal with Sterling, then they will be forced to make a difficult decision, with next summer their final chance to cash in.

Rangers to make '£20m' Olwethu Makhanya move

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider last week that Rangers need to offer a new contract to centre-back Olwethu Makhanya, despite him only joining the club in the summer.

The 22-year-old has wowed fans with his early displays for the Glasgow giants, and is already being tipped as a future Premier League star.

Wyness believes that Makhanya could potentially be worth in excess of £20million in the coming years, but warned that Rangers need to tie him down for as long as possible if they want to guarantee such a fee.

Makhanya signed a four-year deal when he moved to Ibrox, but Wyness is already encouraging the club to add to his stay.
