Greg Docherty has blown away Steven Gerrard and the Rangers coaching staff with his efforts in training, Football Insider understands.

The Scottish midfielder, 23, has made just five appearances for the club this season and none at all since mid-August.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Docherty is working his way back into contention for a first-team spot after being demoted to the reserves.

Docherty has impressed the coaching staff with his fitness, condition and application, and was first among senior players in the running tests in pre-season.

He was used by Gerrard in the early-campaign Europa League qualifiers but has slipped down the pecking order following the summer signings of Joe Aribo, Greg Stewart and Andy King.

In the highly competitive central midfield position, Ryan Jack and Steven Davis have emerged as the first choices ahead of Glen Kamara and Aribo.

Docherty has had to wait for his chance despite a gruelling fixture list and once again failed to make the bench for last Sunday’s 5-0 mauling of Hamilton.

He’s failed to even make a matchday squad for the last two months.

Nevertheless, the former Hamilton midfielder is in the thoughts of Gerrard and regarded as a potential first team player this season.

Docherty returned to Ibrox in the summer after spending last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town.

He made a big impact for the League One club, scoring 10 goals and supplying 11 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Celtic want to blow them away and block bid to take English-club striker to Ibrox.
