Darren Bent gushed about Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz following his performance in the 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Villans attacker shared he had been impressed by Luiz this season due to him having real quality when on the ball.
The 21-year-old Brazilian has scored two goals in nine outings for the Villans since joining the club from Man City in the summer.
Bent admitted that Luiz could have been extra-motivated to impress against Man City due to wanting to show his former side what they were missing, but also acknowledged that every player should be extra-motivated when playing a top-six side.
When asked if Luiz benefited from being extra-motivated against Man City due to facing his old club, Bent told Football Insider: “Possibly.
“It can be extra motivation to face your former side and Luiz has impressed me this season as he has real quality on the ball.
“Yet when you’re playing Man City or any of the top-six sides it’s hard not to be motivated as you’re testing yourself against the best players in the league, although due to the way Man City create chances and tear through teams as a midfielder playing against them you have to do a lot of running as you’re constantly chasing the ball.
“But yeah he did well, but y’know it’s hard when you’re playing Man City.”
Aston Villa spent a notable £15million on signing Luiz in the summer from Man City despite the midfielder not managing to make one appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Man City struggled to get a work permit for Luiz and he ended up spending his 2017/18 as well as 2018/19 campaigns on loan with Spanish side Girona as a result.
