Brendan Rodgers delivers honest verdict ahead of Celtic v Zenit clash
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has stated that he thinks Zenit are the firm favourites to advance in the Europa League, as the two clubs meet at Parkhead tomorrow evening.
In an interview conducted with the BBC, the former Liverpool manager stated a need for his team to understand where they are in terms of European class.
“We have to be realistic – we know where we are.
“I think in terms of the standings of both teams in Europe right now, it would be fair to say that,” Rodgers added when asked if Zenit were the favourites ahead of tomorrow’s fixture.
The Hoops go into the game in a patch of relative poor form, as far as they’re concerned any way, having lost two of their last 11 games, with six games being played since January.
Zenit, on the other hand, have not played in a competitive fixture since mid December, due to an extended winter break for the players.
“You could look at it the other way and say they could be fresher,” Rodgers said.
“They’ve been off for a period of time, but they’ve been working and have played a number of games.”
However, Brendan Rodgers men’s chances have been boosted by Zenit’s loss of Branislav Ivanovic due to an ongoing eye injury, as the former Chelsea man has tasted European success.
Celtic did not feature in the Europa League last season after finishing bottom in their Champions League group, so the Hoops will be looking to make some European History.
