Jamie Redknapp believes that Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool in the summer.
The 25-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield this summer.
The Reds recently publicly apologised for their pursuit of Van Dijk after reports of an alleged illegal approach.
Redknapp has suggested that Liverpool’s chase for the Holland international may not be over and feels he would be a huge signing if he moved to Anfield.
“I don’t think that one’s necessarily over,” Redknapp said, as quoted by Sports Keeda. “I think they apologised for making an enquiry after it became public. If Van Dijk is up for sale and he wants to go to Liverpool, and Liverpool have the money to buy him, the chances are he’ll go there.
“He would be brilliant signing for Liverpool, he’s perfect for what they need. He can score goals, he’s a brilliant defender. He’s a tremendous talent.”
Van Dijk made just 30 appearances last season across all competitions and had his career halted by injury in the second half of the campaign.
However, he has been one of the division’s top defenders during the past couple of years and has become a key man for Southampton.
He moved to the Saints in 2015 and has impressed with his physical presence, while also showing his qualities at previous club Celtic.
Van Dijk would be competing alongside the likes of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.
In other Liverpool transfer news, they have been installed as the second favourites to sign a Bayern Munich first teamer.
