Reliable journalist: This is what must happen for Celtic to seal £4m transfer

By Alex Stevens

Craig Gordon will need to hand in a transfer request to push through a return to the Premier League, according to a reliable journalist.

Telegraph correspondent Matt Law took to Twitter on Monday morning to deliver an update on Chelsea’s pursuit of the Celtic goalkeeper.

It was widely reported last week that Chelsea had bid for veteran Gordon, 34, as they prepare to sell number two Asmir Begovic to Bournemouth.

Law, who broke the news of Chelsea’s interest in Gordon, reported on his personal Twitter account that “it’s going to need” the player to slap in a transfer request and predicted that as “he’s interested, it could happen”.

The Daily Record claim Chelsea returned with a second bid of £4million for Gordon after their initial offer worth up to £3million was rejected.

It is said Celtic are still weighing up the offer for the keeper, who was in goal on Sunday as they demolished Hearts 4-0.

Gordon has established himself as Celtic’s undisputed first choice this season and has been an important player under manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Scottish Premiership leaders have summer signing Dorus de Vries and Logan Bailly in their goalkeeper ranks, but fans might be concerned at the prospect of them taking over from Gordon.

Football Insider verdict:

It will make little difference to Celtic’s chances of trophy success in the second half of the campaign if Gordon quits and joins Chelsea. Yes, De Vries looked shaky during his spell between the sticks but Celtic are so far clear in the title race that vertically-challenged Brendan Rodgers could select himself in goal and his team would still romp away with the title. Celtic should take the money, alert their scouting network for the need of a top-class keeper and buy a new number one in the summer.
