Darren Bent has been left in awe of Tanguy Ndombele’s “scary” performances in the Tottenham midfield this season.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has suggested the north Londoners have finally found a long-term replacement for former fan favourite Mousa Dembele in the 23-year-old.
The France international was publicly criticised by Jose Mourinho for his fitness levels last season but has established himself as a mainstay in the starting XI this term.
Ndombele has started 11 times in his 15 appearances across all competitions this season, with seven consecutive starts in the Premier League.
Bent has insisted that the midfielder brings the perfect blend of physicality and technical quality to the centre of the park and that he could be the player to fill the void left by Dembele back in January 2019.
Bent told Football Insider: “Of the midfielders, Ndombele is the one. He is the one that really, really caught my eye and I thought: ‘Okay, now we’re starting to see somebody who reminds me scarily of Mousa Dembele, someone that they’ve missed for a long time.'”
Asked how significant it was that the French midfielder had managed to start three back-to-back games in the space of eight days, Bent said: “You’re right, it’s massive because they need him.
“When Sissoko plays in there, he’s strong, when Eric Dier plays in there, he’s strong. You’ve got Harry Winks who is a good footballer but not the most physical but in Ndombele you’ve got someone who could do both.
“If you look at his run, I think it was for the first goal (v Ludogorets) where he beats about three or four players, they’re all trying to pull him down, they’re trying to kick him down, they can’s stop him because he’s too powerful.
“So, I mean yeah the turnaround has been magnificent, That’s fair play to Jose Mourinho getting the best out of him, believing in him, working with him and it’s gotten him to this level – as I said, it’s quite scary.”
In other Tottenham news, a Spurs forward has been tipped to leave the club in January.
