Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce is ready to offer £4million to Barnsley for defender James Bree, according to a report.
The Sun claims that Bruce wants to purchase the 19-year-old and place him straight into his side as he plans an overhaul at the Midlands giants.
It is reported that that the young right-back has been watched by top Premier League sides, but Villa are optimistic about their chances with the first serious cash offer.
Bruce is intent on securing Bree’s signature and it is stated that the experienced manager watched the young talent help his side to a clean sheet in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Blackpool before joining his squad ahead of Sunday’s clash with Tottenham.
Bree made his debut for the Yorkshire side in 2014, becoming the clubs second youngest debutant behind current Rochdale attacker Reuben Noble-Lazarus.
The young starlet has been a regular for Paul Heckingbottom’s team this campaign, playing in 19 appearances in all competitions.
The right-back is a particular weak area in the Villa squad with the experienced Alan Hutton having his limitations.
Bruce may now be looking to obtain a new defender and with youngster Bree’s contract set to expire in the summer, he could be perfect.
Football Insider verdict:
Bree would be the ideal signing for Aston Villa in the January window. The youngster still has a lot of room for improvement and with his contract set to expire soon he will be purchased for a lot less than his true value. He would also add to a very weak position in the Midlands giants’ squad and could help the club move up from their current 12th placed position. Bree is currently performing like a player well above his age in the Championship and would be the perfect signing for Villa in the present and for the future.
