Celtic are not in the hunt to sign Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar in the upcoming transfer window, according to a report.
The Daily Record claimed in their live transfer blog on Tuesday [08:56am] that the Bhoys have given a categoric “no” to the chances of signing the Switzerland international after Spanish news outlet El Desmarque reported that Brendan Rodgers was eyeing up a summer deal.
However in a major development, it seems that is not the case and Celtic hold no interest in the 26-year-old.
Swiss news outlet Blick has previously reported that Schar has a relegation release clause in his deal worth £3.5million, which can now be activated with Deportivo doomed to drop out of La Liga.
Football Insider verdict
Celtic do need one or two high-class centre-backs in the summer. Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko are no longer at the required quality to be decent defenders at Celtic Park and Rodgers should be on the look-out for someone who can partner Kristoffer Ajer next season. Schar would be a really good fit and it’s a surprise to see that the Hoops are not chasing down the Swiss centre-back’s signature. £3.5million would be a bargain for someone with international and Champions League experience like him, so if the Bhoys aren’t looking to sign him, are they going to ignore strengthening the defence yet again? It would be very odd if the Hoops do not sign a centre-back this summer. Lets hope that Rodgers can see the obvious flaw in his squad, otherwise they are doomed to have yet more European failures like the maulings to Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
In other Celtic news, the Hoops have this 46-year-old lined up to succeed Brendan Rodgers if he quits the club.
