Celtic are not pursuing FC Sion’s experienced centre-back Reto Ziegler, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun has claimed that the Scottish treble winners will not attempt to sign the European defender, despite him claiming that he has been offered a deal by the Hoops.
Ziegler, 31, also claimed that he in talks with La Liga outfit Real Betis.
“Before I meet with those two clubs, I will also meet with the people who run Sion to find out more,” he said to Swiss newspaper Blick.
“The offers from Celtic and Betis are an honour for me.”
However in a major development, it is understood from the Scottish Sun that Brendan Rodgers has no interest at all in the Sion captain, who has been in great form for his side this season, scoring nine goals in 31 appearances across all competitions despite playing as a centre-back.
Ziegler certainly knows how it feels to play for some of Europe’s top clubs, having had spells at Tottenham, Juventus, Fenerbahce and Hamburg.
He moved to Sion in February 2015 and won the Swiss Cup within months of his arrival.
The 35-times Switzerland international has since made a total of 92 appearances for Sion.
Football Insider Verdict
If Rodgers was going to sign a new centre-back this summer, it would have to be someone who improves on his current first-team options – and Ziegler wouldn’t do that. He’s a decent player but it looks like he has found his level in the Swiss league with Sion. Jozo Simunovic, Dedyrck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko are all much better players and will give the Hoops a higher chance of performing well in Europe next season. However if Rodgers wanted to splash some cash, or replace one of them, with someone a lot better, it’s certain that fans would be more than happy to see him do so.
In other Celtic news, the Hoops have beaten three Premier League clubs to the signing of this playmaker.
