Celtic have approached West Ham to see if they want to reignite their pursuit of star striker Moussa Demebele, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Brighton have held talks with the Hoops for their £25million-rated forward, but are wary of West Ham hijacking their interest ahead of a potential big-money transfer in January.
It is understood that the Seagulls are worried Dembele, 21, would prefer a move to a more “established” Premier League side like the Hammers – and the report stunningly adds that Celtic have in fact approached the East London side to see if they want to splash the cash on the France Under-21 international.
The report says that Everton have also approached the Bhoys about Dembele, however they may be put off by his worrying fitness record in 2017 and the fact that they are understood to be trying to sign Cenk Tosun from Besitkas, who is also valued at £25million.
Football Insider verdict
It seems that Celtic are resigned to losing Dembele and are now offering him out to try and provoke a bidding war. That is a smart approach from the Hoops but it will not be one that the fans will be pleased with as it means that the Scottish champions are now actively trying to sell their star player. Dembele has been in great form in his year-and-a-half at Parkhead, but he is replaceable. Selling him for over £20million will be enough to get in a replacement as well as strengthen the defence. The money pocketed from the sell-on clause in Virgil van Dijk’s £75million to Liverpool will also help.
