Report details update on Tottenham defender pursuit after talks opened on Tuesday

By Tony Hughes

Tottenham are set to hold a second round of talks about signing Brazilian sensation Guilherme Arana, according to a report.

Italian website Tutto Mercato Web claim that Spurs met with Arana’s agent on Tuesday afternoon for preliminary discussions about the Brazilian defender moving to White Hart Lane.

It is said that negotiations progressed smoothly and that Tottenham are keen on continuing negotiations to thrash out a deal.

This comes after TMW reported that Spurs are interested in the Corinthians left-back, 19, but will have to fight off tough competition from Schalke.

It is believed that the German side have also made contact with Arana’s representatives and are interested in prising him from his homeland.

Spurs do have the slight advantage that they have previously negotiated a deal with Corinthians before, with midfielder Paulinho joining the club in 2013.

The north London club are also competing in the Champions League, while Schalke could only offer Europa League football.

Arana has made just 14 senior appearances for Corinthians to date, scoring two goals in the process.

The left-back has also made two appearances for Brazil’s Under-20s side and played 90 minutes in the 2-1 victory against England.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino already has two capable left-backs in Danny Rose and Ben Davies, but may be tempted by youngster Arana.

In other Tottenham transfer news, they have made an approach for a £20million-rated attacker after he was watched six times by scouts.
