Report: Emerging Liverpool starlet set to receive call-up to senior national team

By Harvey Byrne

Liverpool starlet Ovie Ejaria is set to be named in the Nigeria senior national team, according to a report.

Nigerian football website Owngoalnigeria claim that the 18-year-old Reds wonder kid and Arsenal’s Chuba Akpom could make their senior debuts in the 2017 AFCON qualifier against Tanzania.

It is claimed that caretaker head coach Salisu Yusuf has told people close to him that the youngsters are in his plans for the tie on 2 September.

Ejaria trained with the Nigeria Under-17s team of 2013, that boasted the likes of Manchester City wonder kid Kelechi Iheanacho and Watford record signing Isaac Success.

However, the Liverpool youngster left the camp on the insistence of his former club Arsenal.

“Akpom and Ejaria will no doubt be in the team for the Tanzania game, Yusuf has already confirmed he will call them up if they are willing to commit to Nigeria,” said one of his aides to Owngoalnigeria

“Akpom has indicated interest to play for Nigeria but Ejaria, we are yet to establish contact with him, but since he trained with the Under-17 in 2013, we are confident he wants to play for Nigeria.”

Ejaria emerged for Liverpool this summer with impressive performances in the club’s pre-season matches.

The youngster was handed a shock start against Wigan alongside Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and new signing Sadio Mane and didn’t look out of place.

The Merseyside academy that has brought through Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and  Steven Gerrard will be hoping Ejaria can have a long and successful career at Anfield.
