Everton missed out on the signing of Jordan Stevens from Forest Green Rovers on deadline day, according to a report.
News outlet LeedLive claims that Leeds United beat Everton and Brighton to signing Stevens, 17, after he was confirmed to have moved to Elland Road on Thursday morning.
The Whites announced on their official Twitter account and official website that the midfield enforcer had agreed terms to a two-and-a-half-year deal with the option of an extra year in a last-ditch swoop that was made official almost 12 hours after the deadline had passed.
Football Insider had exclusively revealed less than two hours before the January transfer deadline on Wednesday night that the teenager had completed his move to Elland Road, beating Premier League sides to his signature.
It is now understood that Everton and Brighton were those top-flight sides in question.
Stevens had been playing regular football for Forest Green Rovers, making 15 appearances in all competitions and scoring one goal in the process after making his professional debut in September.
Football Insider verdict
After signing Eliaquim Mangala, Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott in the January transfer window, it’s fair to say that Everton will not be losing much sleep over missing out on Stevens. He seems like a decent young player but he may have just preferred the chance to move to a Championship club where first-team football is a much more realistic aim for him in the next few years. Everton do give chances to young players but with the major influx of money at Goodison Park in the past couple of seasons, chances may become more and more limited for academy products in the future. Ademola Lookman’s loan exit to RB Leipzig shows that it is hard for young English players to make the grade in the Premier League nowadays.
