Report: Ex-Manchester United man heads to Aston Villa, deal done in days

By Amir Mir

Aston Villa are set to announce Steve Round as their new technical director, according to a report.

The Birmingham Mail claim that the ex-Manchester United and Everton assistant will be charged with overseeing the club’s recruitment and overseeing their transfer dealings.

Round was in the stands as Villa beat Rotherham 3-0 on Saturday and is set to be appointed to the new role this week.

It is said Roberto Di Matteo will still have a final say on transfers, and that the Italian has given his blessing to the appointment of Round.

Round is a highly-rated and experienced coach, and is now set to dedicate a large chunk of his time with improving the long-term strategy of the Championship club.

Villa chief executive Keith Wyness has previously worked with Round at Everton.

Paddy Riley is the current head of recruitment, but he was heavily criticised for his involvement in the club’s  woeful summer signings for the 2015-16  Premier League season which led to their relegation.

In other Aston Villa team news, owner Tony Xia has sent a Twitter message to Jack Grealish after his first goal at Villa Park.
