Leeds United are in a battle with Hull City to sign £3million-rated Peterborough striker Jack Marriott, according to a report.
The Mirror report that the two Championship clubs are the front-runners to sign the League One striker, who has scored 23 goals in his 36 games this season.
Marriott helped his case for a big-money move this weekend, as his late goal helped Peterborough to defeat Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup.
The only Englishman with more club goals this season in the top-four divisions is Tottenahm Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
Marriott, who joined the Posh from Luton for an undisclosed fee last Summer, has been one of League One’s most exciting players to watch, and his current manager Grant McCann believes he can play at a higher level: “With his pace and his goals, I am sure he could easily play in the Championship – or maybe higher.
“I don’t think the chairman or Barry Fry are trying to sell him, but there is no doubt in my mind that Jack is way above League One,” McCann added.
Leeds will be in the market for new goal threats after their star attacker Samu Saiz was banned for six games for spitting in the FA Cup defeat against Newport County.
Football Insider verdict:
Leeds have a talent for finding good players in the lower leagues, and turning them into high quality talents. One example of this is Kemar Roofe. Should any deal go ahead, Marriott would be in great hands. Although he has not played at that level before, his track record shows signs of improvement at every club he joins, and the 23-year-old still has time on his side. His current manager believes he would succeed at the Championship level, and he knocked Championship side Aston Villa out of the cup, so his future certainly looks promising.
