Report: Mourinho to launch Manchester United bid to sign Real Madrid first teamer (not Bale)
By Aramide Oladipo
Manchester United are interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to a report.
Spanish outlet Don Balon claims that United manager Jose Mourinho is looking to strengthen his defensive options and he believes that the 24-year-old is the perfect fit.
The report claims that the Portuguese boss is prepared to promise the central defender a chance to be a regular at Old Trafford and a substantial increase in his salary.
The Portuguese boss has reportedly toyed with the idea of making a move for the Frenchman in the past but a potential deal has never materialised.
It is said that the player is not interested in leaving the Champions League winners this summer.

Mourinho signed Varane during his spell as Real Madrid manager and both men enjoyed success together, securing the La Liga title during the 2011-12 campaign.
The France international has already featured in all three competitive matches for Madrid this season, helping them win the UEFA Super Cup against United and also the Spanish Super Cup against arch rivals Barcelona.
Varane currently has three years remaining on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Football Insider verdict
There is no doubt that Varane would be an excellent addition to the United squad this season. Although United picked up a clean sheet in their opening match of the league season, there are still doubts surrounding a number of their defenders with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in particular who struggled with fitness last season. Mourinho already invested heavily in centre-back Victor Lindelof this summer but the Swede was not even selected in the matchday squad last weekend after failing to impress with his performances in pre-season. With the transfer window approaching the finish line, United would have to table a sensational offer in order for Madrid to consider sanctioning a move for Varane this summer.
In other Manchester United news, the deal is all but done for a pocket-sized speed machine to join the Old Trafford club.
