Report: Newcastle close in on 26-goal striker, deal expected this weekend
By Derek Smithson
Newcastle are close to completing a loan deal for Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham, according to a report.
The Mail claim that the 19-year-old is “on the verge” of moving to St James’ Park on loan and that Rafael Benitez’s connections with Chelsea have helped sweeten the deal.
It is understood that the Magpies appear to have beaten off competition from Premier League rivals Leicester and Brighton for his signature, with the report stating: “Newcastle have secured a loan deal”.
The report details that Chelsea are open to the idea of allowing the England Under-21 international to experience first-team football in the Premier League, which would follow on from his 26-goal heroics at Championship club Bristol City last season.
The Mail states that Newcastle are now set to complete the deal for Abraham this weekend and that Benitez has spoken with the youngster himself to convince him to move.

Abraham is considered to be one of the best young talents at Stamford Bridge and is being tipped for a future first-team role.
The pacy striker spent last season out on loan at Bristol City and struck 26 goals across all competitions, including 23 in the league.
He managed to be prolific in front of goal for a team 17th in the Championship and now looks set to make the step up with Newcastle.
Benitez is moulding his squad ahead of their return to the Premier League and is adding to the attacking options of Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy.
Football Insider verdict:
Abraham would be a brilliant deal for Newcastle as the youngster has the potential to become a star. Chelsea similarly loaned out Romelu Lukkau to West Brom a few years ago and he showed his top-flight pedigree at a young age, something that Abraham certainly could try to emulate. Benitez needs some extra firepower in attack and a loan deal means he can spend money elsewhere on further recruitments. The 19-year-old deserves a crack in the Premier League after his form next year and is definitely one to watch out for, with his deadly finishing in the 18-yard box a major part of his game.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they have made contact for a La Liga defender wth an £8.7million release clause.
