Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has been named as the number one managerial target for West Ham if they fail to agree terms with David Moyes in upcoming negotiations, according to a report.
West Ham news outlet Claret and Hugh, who have established themselves as a reputable source of information surrounding the Irons, claim that the Magpies’ Spanish boss, who is a firm favourite of the Toon Army, heads a five man shortlist of potential replacements for Moyes.
It is said that the Hammers are keen to keep the former Everton and Manchester United man on after his short-term stay at the London Stadium, and are preparing talks to extend his contract, although there is said to be some doubt on the manager’s behalf over whether he will commit.
Football Insider verdict
There will be many Irons fans scratching their heads over the decision to try and keep Moyes at the club, especially if the claims of him having doubts are true. The Scot has divided opinion with his stint in the dugout at the London Stadium and with the names that are being suggested, Benitez included, the Hammers faithful are likely going to view them as much more exciting propositions than the ex-Sunderland boss. Still, it appears as though the board are happy with the way he has led the team this season, securing Premier League safety after a nervy end to the campaign, and there will be hope of a much-improved campaign after the summer break. Until then, sorting out who is going to be the man in charge is the biggest issue, and it is time for those at the top to knuckle down and get that confirmed.
In other West Ham news, the club are said to have held a second round of talks with a Premier League winner.
