Report: Newcastle make contact for £15m-rated La Liga forward, forgotten PL man also on shortlist
By Derek Smithson
Newcastle want to sign either Villarreal’s Cedric Bakambu or Liverpool’s Danny Ings in the summer to bolster their frontline, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the Magpies are set to land Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan, but still want a further attacking addition following their return to the Premier League.
It is understood that the north-east club have made contact with La Liga club Villarreal about their forward Bakambu, who scored 11 goals in 34 appearances last season.
The report details that the Spanish club are holding out for £15million for their striker’s signature, but Newcastle are looking to agree a lower fee.
Meanwhile, Liverpool forward Ings is the other target being considered and he has become a forgotten man in the top flight due to his bad luck with knee injuries.

The Sun states that Rafael Benitez is ideally looking to secure a loan deal for the Englishman due to doubts over his fitness.
Bakambu, 26, was in good form last season in Spain and is recognised for his blistering pace.
The striker missed part of the season due to his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo, but still helped Villarreal to fifth in La Liga and played seven times in the Europa League.
Liverpool attacker Ings continued his injury nightmare by making just two senior appearances last season as the 24-year-old remained restricted on the sideline, but is expected back to fitness for pre-season.
Football Insider verdict:
Newcastle are only hoping to sign one of their attacking targets and Bakambu should definitely be their priority. They want someone who can make an immediate impact in their starting line-up and unfortunately injury-prone Ings is too much of a risk. Ings has shown in the past that he has a lot of potential and can be prolific in front of goal, but is not a viable solution for the Magpies next season. Meanwhile, Bakambu could be a great addition and even better if they can negotiate the £15million transfer fee. He looks tailor-made for the pace of the Premier League and has proven his goalscoring qualities, scoring 33 goals in 84 appearances for Villarreal.
