Newcastle United have opened talks with Besiktas over the possibility of signing midfield maestro Tolgay Arslan in the summer transfer window, according to a report.
Football news website Turkish-Football claim that the Magpies have had scouts watching over the 27-year-old’s performances in the Turkish top flight this season and that they have made initial inquiries over a move.
However, the German born star has also reportedly been attracting attention from Premier League champions Chelsea, with the Blues said to have joined Newcastle in keeping a close eye on the former Borussia Dortmund youngster.
A central midfielder who can play both in a defensive and attacking role, he has made 33 appearances for Besiktas this season, managing to chip in with just a single assist.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle have already seen this season that injury or suspension can decimate their creativity from the middle of the park, with Jonjo Shelvey’s absence throughout the campaign having seriously hindered them. They must strengthen in the role over the summer and it looks as though Arslan could be near the top of the list with their initial inquiries. They will not want to be committing to any expenditure just yet, with Premier League survival still not secured and the possibility of a takeover coming in the summer, but they will also have to be wary of other clubs swooping in and poaching the midfielder from under their nose. The sooner the Magpies secure their future, the sooner then can get snapping up deals of their own.
