Report: Newcastle ready record-breaking January swoop for eight-goal international attacker
By Russell Edge
Newcastle United are lining up a £17.5million (€20million) bid for Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun in January with a host of Premier League sides interested in his services, according to a report.
CNN Turk report on their website that the Magpies’ top flight rivals Tottenham and Crystal Palace are expected to increase their efforts to bring him to England, but it is Rafael Benitez’s side who are leading the way.
They claim Newcastle are keen to snap up the 26-year-old in January and are readying a bid which would break their current transfer record of the £16million spent on Michael Owen in 2005.
The 23-time-capped Turkish international, who also turned out for Germany’s youth sides when he was younger, has had an impressive start to the current campaign, with eight goals in 13 appearances across all competitions, the same amount he has scored for his country.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a proven goal scorer, with doubts over the abilities of Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joselu in England’s top flight. Tosun has proven he knows where the goal is but could he replicate his form in a much more competitive league? Obviously there will be question marks over any import from overseas, especially a striker, whether they can do the business in the Premier League but the Besiktas man seems as good a bet as any to succeed. The reported £17.5million bid really is not a lot in today’s market and if he can net the Magpies some much needed goals, it could prove to be a priceless move.
