Report: Newcastle set to break transfer record as Benitez homes in on £20m PL hitman
Newcastle United are preparing a swoop on Leicester City as they eye a deal for their Algerian hitman Islam Slimani that would break their transfer record, according to a report.
The Mirror hinted that a move for the Premier League forward could soon be in the offing and Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is thought to be willing to fork out the £20million that the Foxes rate the attacker at.
Newcastle are fighting for Premier League survival and the Spanish boss sees Slimani – who has been watched by Magpies scouts – as a key component in the Tyneside outfit’s battle to avoid the drop.
The 29-year-old hitman has 5 goals in all competitions this season and was signed for £29m by Leicester in 2016 from Sporting Lisbon.
Slimani’s career in the English top flight has never really gotten off the ground but with Newcastle, the Algerian would get the game time he has been bereft of in the East Midlands.
The Magpies have also been linked with Feyenoord forward Nicolai Jorgsensen as they look to improve their attacking options.
Football Insider verdict:
Benitez has been crying out for additions to his squad for months now and this looks like a signing that could work for Newcastle. The Magpies need goals which have been in short supply this season – just 22 have been registered this term – making them one the lowest scoring sides in the Premier League. However, Slimani is not exactly a goal machine. It also looks likely that Aleksandar Mitrovic could be set for a move away from the club, while Nicolai Jorgsensen is being touted as an incoming, so it all points to the idea that Benitez is desperate to make improvements to his attacking options.
