Newcastle United have slapped a £20million price tag on the head of powerhouse striker Aleksandar Mitrovic after his fine form while on loan at Fulham, according to a report.
The Mirror claim on their live transfer blog (23/04, 12:02) on their website that the Magpies have ramped up their demands for the 23-year-old after seeing him smash home 11 goals in his 15 appearances for the Cottagers, helping launch them into contention for an automatic play off position come the end of the season.
It is said that Fulham could well be interested in making the move permanent, while he has been linked to a permanent exit elsewhere after struggling on Tyneside.
The Serbian joined up with the London based team in January after failing to establish himself as a regular among Rafael Benitez’s first team, having joined for a reported £13million back in 2015, as claimed by the Chronicle.
However, the Mirror’s report states that the potential profit could continue to rise over the summer, with Mitrovic set to lead the line for Serbia in their World Cup campaign in Russia.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle will be wary over just how much they can demand for Mitrovic, for the recruitment of another striker to replace him is all dependent on his exit. The £20million asking price might seem high but if Fulham get promoted to the top flight, and want to keep him on at Craven Cottage, then the Magpies are right to demand such a high fee. As for his summer performances, they could go one of two ways. Either he stars up top and adds some extra millions to his price tag, or he fails to impress and Newcastle struggle to justify why they are asking for £20million for a forward who has only just proven himself in England – and in the Championship no less.
