Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett is being eyed up by England manager Gareth Southgate for a stunning switch of allegiances from Wales to the Three Lions ahead of this summer’s World Cup, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim on their website that the versatile left back, who has also proven himself at the heart of defence, joins Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey on the England boss’ radar for a surprise call up for the squad which will travel to Russia.
The 26-year-old already has two caps under his belt for Wales, but as both of those outings came in friendly fixtures, he is still able to turn out for the Three Lions, having been born in Newcastle.
He has been a mainstay in defence since returning from injury this season, making 13 appearances across all competitions.
Football Insider verdict
While Paul Dummett has become a fan favourite at Newcastle, even the most fervent of the left back’s fans would consider it a huge shock to see him turn out for England any time soon. He is a reliable defender but is probably not at the level expected at the Three Lions, although the same may be said for some members of the current squad. For now, he needs to keep his head down and continue performing at his best for the Magpies. Then, and only then, might things change, but a call up for the World Cup seems beyond his reach, barring an absolute miracle.
