Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett is set for a switch to centre back in the future as manager Rafael Benitez eyes up a record swoop for Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim on their website that the Spanish boss is a big fan of the 22-year-old England international and that he will be keeping a close eye on the left back’s situation at Old Trafford after once again being criticised by manager Jose Mourinho.
The Magpies were said to have launched a move for the £20million-rated defender in January, and could try once again come the summer window, leaving the future of current left back stalwart Dummett in doubt.
The Welsh international has cemented his position as the first choice on the left side of defence, with 13 appearances this season after recovering from injury, but it is said that the club see him as switching to a centre back in the long-term, and that move could be accelerated by a swoop for Shaw, whose asking price would be a record fee for the Magpies, breaking the £16million spent on Michael Owen in 2005.
Football Insider verdict
The future of Shaw certainly seems in doubt and Newcastle would be the sort of club he could relaunch his career at after a stuttering time with the Red Devils. Still, his price tag looks far above what the Magpies are willing to spend on anyone, let alone a defender who looks to be culled by his current club, and without a cut price deal it does not look like a move which will go through. There will be a lot of interest in snapping up the youngster, and without the financial clout behind them, Newcastle do not stand a chance of competing. Dummett may well have to stay at left back for a little bit longer.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the Magpies must break their rivals’ hearts with a big-money swoop for a midfield maestro.
