Burnley manager Sean Dyche has added Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie to his list of potential January targets as he lines up a swoop for a new wide man, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim on their website that the Magpies’ Premier League rivals have shortlisted the likes of Everton’s Aaron Lennon and West Brom’s James McClean, as well as Ritchie, after first team star Robbie Brady suffered a major injury blow which is set to keep him out of action for the rest of the season.
Scotland international Ritchie, who arrived at Newcastle in a reported £12million move from Bournemouth in 2016, has established himself as a star performer at St James’ Park, with the wing maestro missing just one of the club’s 22 league games for a total of 70 appearances under his belt for the Magpies.
Football Insider verdict
Despite some recent poor form, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez known just how much of an impact Ritchie can have in games, and will therefore be reluctant to let him depart. At 28-years-old, he still has plenty to offer, although his legs may well start to slow down in the coming years. His work ethic is near-enough second to none in the Newcastle squad, and although he might not have the pace and trickery of other wingers, he still provides a potent attacking threat. The only way he would be leaving for Burnley is if they offer a significant amount of money, over the £12million spent on him over a year ago, which would help Benitez reinforce his side with some much needed transfer funds.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the Spanish boss has told a trio they can leave the club, slapping a bargain price tag on a surprise star.
