Report: Proven PL performer set for Everton medical on Wednesday night

By Danny Wright

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is set for a medical with Everton on Wednesday night, according to a report.

The Sun has claimed that staff members have flown out to Poland to meet up with the England Under-21 ‘keeper while he is preparing for this summer’s European Championship.

It is understood that the Toffees are eager to get a deal done as soon as possible for the 23-year-old, who proved himself to be a capable Premier League performer with Sunderland last season.

The Black Cats are said to have accepted a stunning £30million for Pickford, which would make him the most expensive goalkeeper in British football and the third most expensive in the world.

The Sun reports that personal terms have already been agreed between the English youth international and Everton, so the deal will be finalised as soon as he has passed his medical.

Pickford made 33 appearances across all competitions with Sunderland last season, keeping five clean sheets.

He performed above and beyond expectations in a very poor David Moyes side that was relegated from the Premier League in 20th position.

The shot-stopper only made his senior debut for the Black Cats last January when he played in an FA Cup loss to Arsenal.

Football Insider Verdict

It looks as though Ronald Koeman is about to finalise his first Toffees signing of the summer, and what a statement he will be making. Pickford will be the Merseysiders’ most expensive transfer in history, beating the £28million fee splashed on Romelu Lukaku in 2014. It’s definitely a good investment though, because Pickford can offer years of service to the Blues and is bound to be an England No 1 in the not too distant future. Everton had to strengthen their defence this summer and the best way to do that is to improve on the goalkeepers currently in the squad. No one has stamped their authority between the sticks since Tim Howard left, but Pickford looks to be the man to do just that.

In other Everton news, Liverpool icon Michael Owen has had his say about the Toffees’ valuation of Pickford.
