Report: Tottenham and Arsenal engage on mission for 21-year-old international maestro
North London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal were both in the stands at Old Trafford on Tuesday to scout CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandar Golovin, according to a report.
Russian sports news outlet R-Sport claim on their website that the English duo were watching on in Manchester United’s 2-1 Champions League win over the Russian side, with 21-year-old midfield maestro Golovin the centre of their attentions.
It is said that Borussia Dortmund were also keeping a close eye on the Russian international, who has made 15 appearances for his country, and that it is the German giants who are most interested in securing his services at present.
The attacking midfielder, who can also operate in a deeper role or even on the right flank, has made 27 appearances across all competitions for CSKA, netting three times and chipping in with four assists, and is contracted at the club until 2021.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham and Arsenal are now very much in the same ball park in terms of the Premier League and will find themselves fighting over transfer targets much more often than in the past. Golovin seems like a promising player and his international record is impressive for someone so young. However he is yet to prove himself in the Champions League, with just one assist to his name this season, and both Spurs and the Gunners need players who can have a instant impact. Another question to ask is which side would he suit better? Both Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger have impressive records for developing young talent, and so it could simply come down to who is performing better both domestically and on the European stage. On the other hand, as is so often the case with modern football, it may simply come down to who can offer the most money.
