Tottenham are keeping close tabs on Belgium sensation Youri Tielemans, according to a report.
The Mail claim the London giants sent scouts to watch the midfield goal machine in Europa League action for his club Anderlecht against Zenit St Petersburg last Thursday.
It is said that Spurs talent spotters ran the rule over the player regarded as “the biggest young talent” in Belgium.
The country has produced some a generation of outstanding players, most notably Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, and three of his countrymen are already on the books at White Hart Lane, Mousa Dembele, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.
The Mail report that Everton and Manchester United have previously courted Tielemans, 19, and Spurs have joined the pursuit as he fits the bill for chairman Daniel Levy.
The long-standing Spurs chief, who is one of three men on the club’s recruitment committee along with first-team manager Mauricio Pochettino and academy chief John McDermott, is focused on signing emerging stars at affordable prices.
Central midfielder Tielemans has earned rave reviews since making his Anderlecht debut at the age of 16.
He has already accumulated a remarkable 168 first team appearances, which have yielded 33 goals and 25 assists, and earned two full international caps.
In 36 matches in all competitions this season, Tielemans has scored 16 goals from his central midfield position, including 11 in 25 league matches.
He has also weighed in with nine assists, seven of which have come in league competition.
Football Insider verdict:
Finances have always been fairly tight during the Levy/Joe Lewis regime, but the pursestrings have been squeezed even further by the need to finance a shiny new stadium. Pochettino has bought into the policy of developing stars rather than buying them as the club aim to continue their net profit transfer market success. This means the focus is on scouring the globe for the best emerging talent and snapping them up at affordable prices before honing them into Premier League players on the training ground. Tielemans is regarded as a rising star in his homeland and appears to fit the bill perfectly for Spurs.
In other Tottenham transfer news, Daniel Levy has lined up the next Spurs arrival as the deal is all but done.
