Report: Tottenham favourite eyes up shock summer exit to secure dream move to third-placed side
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is considering making a shock exit from the club this summer in order to make a dream move to become boss of Real Madrid, according to a report.
Yahoo Sport claim that the Argentine manager, who has been at Spurs since 2014, has long held aspirations to take over at the Bernabeu and that with Zinedine Zidane’s position under heavy scrutiny, he could make the move at the end of the season.
It is said that Real chief Florentino Perez has Pochettino on top his shortlist to replace the French icon after being frustrated with the club’s domestic campaign which has left them sitting third in La Liga after winning the title last season, and is set to drop the axe if he fails to secure the Champions League for the third successive season.
The Spurs boss, who is a firm favourite of the Lilywhite faithful, has a contract which runs until 2021, and it is said chief Daniel Levy is looking to extend that deal.
Football Insider verdict
There will be few Tottenham fans who would begrudge Pochettino if he did decide to move to Real Madrid, although they would be desperate to have at least another season with him at the helm. Real is the next level for the boss and the demands would be significantly higher than at Spurs. Is he ready to make that step up? He has not won a title while in north London and there may be accusations that they are chokers, having failed to push on to success after being well placed to do so. However, another season at Spurs could well ruin his chances of ever getting the Real job, and if the Spanish giants do come calling, it would be tough to turn them down.
