Manchester United chief Ed Woodward is in charge of transfers and contracts

Tottenham have been handed a boost in their hopes of keeping Danny Rose in January after Manchester United chief Ed Woodward blocked Jose Mourinho’s move for the defender, according to a report.
The Mirror claim on their website that the Portuguese manager had identified the 27-year-old left back as his top transfer target for the winter window, as he looks to strengthen in what he views to be the club’s weakness.
However it is reported that executive vice-chairman Woodward has not given the green light on a mega money swoop for Rose, who is said to be available for a fee in the region of £50million, and has instead been offering alternative targets for Mourinho to consider.
The report also states that if the United boss is desperate to secure the 14-cap England international, he will have to sell some of the current players at Old Trafford or wait until summer.
Rose, who has 140 appearances for Tottenham under his belt, has turned out nine times this season after recovering from a major knee injury which kept him out of action for eight months, and is contracted until 2021.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham fans may well be divided over Woodward’s decision to block a move for Rose, with differing opinions on whether Spurs should sell up or not. The £50million price tag, which Mourinho seems happy to meet, would be a huge financial boost to the club, but on the flip side, they would be losing one of their star performers, just as they did Kyle Walker over the summer. Still, if the report is to be believed, then Tottenham have been handed a major boost in their hopes of keeping a hold of the left back, which could prove crucial to the club’s success across the three remaining competitions they are involved in this season.
