Report: Tottenham offer for 21-year-old rejected, second bid to be tabled in days

By Amir Mir

Tottenham have had a £1.7million bid for Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez rejected, according to a report.

Spanish outlet Sport claim the Londoners have made a formal move for the Spanish shot stopper as manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to add competition for established No1 Hugo Lloris.

It is said that Spurs will table a second formal bid for Lopez in the coming days as they attempt to secure to signing of the Spain Under-21 international.

Lopez made his debut for Espanyol in 2014, a club previously managed by Pochettino, who wants to bring the 21-year-old to White Hart Lane.

Lopez made 38 appearances for the La Liga club last term, as he conceded 74 goals, which included seven clean sheets.

This is in stark contrast to Lloris, who kept 13 clean sheets and a league low of 35 Premier League goals conceded for the 2015-16 season.

Pochettino’s ties with his former club could help smooth out the deal as the Argentine boss looks to add his third major signing of the summer.

Pochettino has signed striker Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar for a fee of £18.8 million, as well as midfield powerhouse Victor Wanyama who signed from Premier League rivals Southampton.

Spurs finished an impressive third last season which secured them Champions League football, as the north London club prepare for a difficult season starting away at Everton on 13 August.

In other Tottenham transfer news, Spurs are in talks over a deal for a playmaker who is worth up to £8 million.
