Tottenham are ready to offer an escape route to Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw if Manchester City successfully lure away Danny Rose in the summer, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that Shaw is ready to quit United this summer with Spurs a possible destination if their neighbours City splash the cash on Rose.
Southampton academy product Shaw moved to Old Trafford from St Mary’s during the summer of 2014 for a fee of £27million.
He suffered a serious leg injury last season which kept him out for the entire campaign and has barely featured under Jose Mourinho this term.
The 21-year-old ace was left out of the squads that faced Saint-Etienne in the Europa League last Thursday and the side that won the League Cup at Wembley three days later.
As a result, it is reported that Shaw has been left dismayed by Mourinho’s plans with the England international now fourth choice at the club and resigned to leaving.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who worked with the youngster at Southampton, is said to be a huge admirer of Shaw who is prepared to take a pay cut on his £80,000-a-weeek contract in order to get regular football.
First choice England left-back Rose is a senior member of Pochettino’s side and it is reported by the Mirror that he is braced for a summer of interest from the blue half of Manchester.
Rose signed a new five-year contract with the London-based club in September, but it is said that he is being scouted by City who want a new full-back with their current crop of players now over the age of 31.
Football Insider verdict:
Spurs should remain firm and show the footballing world that they no longer are a selling club. Apart from financially, Manchester City are not in a better position than the north London club. As proven this season, they can offer CL football and a Premier League title challenge to their players – just like City – therefore moving to the Etihad would be a big mistake by Rose and a body blow to the club. Shaw has not played regular football in recent seasons and would need time to adapt, something Pochettino’s side cannot afford to do in a specialist position.
