Report: West Ham star lined up for top flight transfer exit despite summer deal
West Ham midfield star Pedro Obiang is being lined up for a January transfer move by Italian top flight side Fiorentina, according to a report.
Italian football news website CalcioMercato claim that the 25-year-old is being eyed up for a potential move by the side sitting ninth in Serie A, with the Hammers man seen as a replacement for Milan Badelj ahead of his prospective departure.
The 28-year-old Croatian is out of contract in the summer and so La Viola may end up selling him this month to receive a transfer fee, and view Spanish central star Obiang as an option to take his place.
The Hammers’ star, who signed a new contract deal tying him to the club until 2022 back in July 2017, has made 23 appearances this season, scoring twice, with a total of 88 outings under his belt since joining from Sampdoria.
Football Insider verdict
West Ham securing Obiang to a new deal last summer would no doubt have been to ward off any potential suitors, and with Fiorentina sniffing around they will be able to demand a premium price if they were going to sell. Still, he has been an important member of the squad this season, especially under David Moyes, and they are unlikely to want to see him depart any time soon. Fiorentina are not exactly competing at a higher level than the Hammers in Serie A, and while a return to Italy might be viewed as sentimental, it is not a return home or to a former club. A non-starter for now, although things may change in the future.
